General Info
With its quaint cobblestone streets and well-preserved churches and homes, the flavor of Georgetown is really quite colonial. Located south of Pawleys Island at the foot of the Grand Strand, the one-time rice plantation and shipping community is often called "Little Charleston." The bell-towered Rice Museum, which dominates the center of town, features exhibits that track the town's antebellum history. Georgetown has been ranked among the top 100 small towns in America, and it's not hard to see why. If you're looking for charm, tranquility and a place to call home, Georgetown is it!
Location
Georgetown is located in Georgetown County, eight miles inland from the Atlantic, on U.S. Highway 17 in the Low Country. The town is 35 miles south of Myrtle Beach and 60 miles north of Charleston.
History
As the state's third-oldest city, Georgetown dates back to 1729, when the town was laid out by Elisha Screven. The original four-by-eight block grid is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A bustling seaport in colonial times, tall-masted sailing ships brought goods from Europe and left with Low Country trade: indigo in the mid-1700s; rice, cotton and lumber in later years.
Georgetown's tidelands follow a winding path that meanders through marshes, beaches and varied ports of call. The town's motto, “Where no
one is ever in a hurry,” really holds true. Browse the town's streets, stroll along the beach and sail the nearby waters. Or take a different trip back in time with a visit to some of the region's historic plantations.
Homes & Pricing
With its culture and history, one would expect to pay a high price in Georgetown, but nothing could be further from the truth! A traditional-style Cape Cod, shutters and all, with three bedrooms and a boat dock sells for around $170,000. If you're willing to go a little further inland, prices reduce even more, and a large traditional style colonial sells for $150,000. There is some new construction in the area, and large Southern-style estates are on the market for $500,000 and up.
