South Carolina Real Estate > Charleston:

General Info

A thriving culture and high quality of life make Charleston one of the top vacation and relocation destinations in the country. There are a variety of residential options to match any lifestyle. Homeowners can choose antebellum mansions and plantation estates, charming historic houses, oceanfront island villas, newer suburban homes or easy-living condominiums. Long- and short-term rentals are also available.

Location & Recreation

Centrally located along the Atlantic Coast, Charleston boasts a multibillion-dollar tourism industry. The city is one of the Southeast's largest medical hubs, with a well-established base of manufacturers and a large military presence. Cultural and recreational opportunities abound, from museums, music, dance and theater to water sports, golf, hunting, fishing and horseback riding.

The Charleston real estate market is diverse, encompassing the towns of Summerville, Goose Creek and Moncks Corner; the resort islands of Kiawah, Seabrook, Isle of Palms, Wild Dunes and Sullivan’s Island; and the neighboring community of Mount Pleasant, N.C. No matter which locale you choose, Charleston is a delightful place to vacation or live.

History

Charming Charleston is often called a "living museum." The entire area is a feast for the senses, with history serving as the main course. Church bells toll the hour as history unfolds around every corner. Throughout Charleston and its neighboring communities, the past and present intertwine. Formal gardens magnify the beauty of stately, centuries-old homes, and lush plantations and gardens offer visitors a glimpse into life during the antebellum era. But Charleston is also a modern city with all the amenities of a 21st-century metropolitan area.
Settled in 1670 by English colonists, Charleston attracted many immigrants because of its religious tolerance and its lucrative seafaring trade. Charleston's history can be seen in the city's well-preserved architecture and on the historic plantations and gardens that are just a short drive away. Museums and historic tours offer even more insight into Charleston’s 300-plus-year history.
